Rolling drumbeats and rattling tambourines heralded our 2023 Season Launch, as the backdrop of colourful dupattas wafted gently to the applause of the audience.

The event began with the Nautanki song, an original version accompanied by musical instruments and sung by the team. Neel Banerjee in his elegant dhoti-kurta ensemble complimented with boots, showed off a few original dance moves too!

Madhavi Shankarling launched the event with the Acknowledgement to Country and welcomed guests, offering an insight into what makes Nautanki tick.

Neel Banerjee, CEO and Founder then took centrestage to unveil Nautanki’s 2023 plans and initiatives.

From consultation with the Pakistani creative community to collaborate on projects, to Step in Saray, our professional development series for creatives, we have a full-on agenda.

Neel will be heading off to Dhaka for a 10-day residency in February and he’s looking forward to the learnings and development that will emerge from the trip.

We have performances in the pipeline, the annual South Asian Theatre mela will commence in August, Bunty Barber, a dance theatre presentation will be in September and we are co-producing Human Activity with bAKEHOUSE in October. Watch this space!

In the quiz that followed, Sheryl Fernandes Dixit engaged the audience on how Nautanki operates, and requested support and involvement through memberships, collaboration, volunteering and donations.

The event ended on a high note with thanks to attendees, the Nautanki Ops Team and Riverside Theatre for their assistance in making the event a success.

Guests and the team mingled and networked over drinks and nibbles.

We look forward to a rockin’ year of Nautankiness!
