One for all and all for one

At Nautanki, diversity and inclusion are key.

Everyone is welcome to our group regardless of gender, heritage, origin, and beliefs.

If you are an actor looking for an opportunity to perform, a theatre specialist or simply an enthusiast, we welcome you into our community.

We believe in equality, collaboration and enjoy the experience of interacting with various cultures that make Australia home.

To the Ops team at Nautanki, diversity is a representation of who we are and what we stand for, and the respect we offer every single living thing.

Reema Gillani,  Production Manager, offers the Nauntaki perspective on what we mean by diversity.

“Nautanki has been operating in the performing arts space for ten years now. In my own experience, from the South Asian theatre context there’s barely any representation of diversity within mainstream performing arts. What is there, seems to be tokenistic.

We’re all immigrants. We’ve been here long enough and integrated in society to have stronger representation. We have a voice, poignant, important and relevant stories to tell. All we need is the opportunity to bring this diversity we have and believe in, into the spotlight.

Our stories are also Australian, experiences that are enriched and ground-breaking.

But South Asian stories told in mainstream theatre are stereotypical and almost tokenistic and superficial, to be honest. They simply scratch the surface.

Instead if you dig deeper into our cultural nuances, we can bring true stories to light that reflect the variety and depth of our cultures, traditions, experiences that are contemporary and relevant.

To me, that’s real diversity and what Nautanki strives to achieve in the performing arts space.”

Neel Bannerji, Founder and CEO of Nautanki Theatre Company shares his viewpoint and vision for diversity in the arts.

“Nautanki is my labour of love, my passion and living vision. But in truth, it would not have become a reality if we had a conservative approach towards diversity.

We are a proud South Asian performing arts not for profit organisation. Our very core is made from different artists coming together to create amazing theatre that entertains audiences of every background.”

We do not discriminate in our search for talent. For instance, The Jungle Book (2022) had actors and technicians from Australian, Indian, Sri Lankan, Aboriginal, etc. backgrounds. We all worked together harmoniously and created a show that was very well received.

Our mission is to champion South Asian creatives who are brimming with talent but lack representation on the Australian stage.

Our focus areas are :

  •  Creating opportunity for Australian creatives of colour who identify as of South Asian descent.
  • Creating diverse content for the stage that tells South Asian stories.
  • Creating future leaders of arts in Australia.
