Step in Saray: A Noteable South Asian Theatre Company in Sydney
Step-in Saray is a laboratory where theatre creatives share stories, skills, and ideas. Employing ground-breaking methodology through 3 interlinked subprojects, industry professionals facilitate the incubation of local talents to shape a new generation of theatre practitioners. The timeframe is 10 months.
Saray 2025-26 is supported through the City of Parramatta's Creative Grant and Seaborn, Broughton & Walford Foundation's Project Grant.
This project focuses on the growth and development of creative industries in the Local Government Area (LGA), responding to the Council’s vision of Parramatta as a centre of growth and long-term prosperity. In Hindi/Urdu, “saray” is a place where travellers/caravans would rest (caravansarai) – a place where all are welcome.
The project supports the development of local stories and culture by creating avenues for local Culturally and Linguistically Divers (CaLD) artists to impact creative industries in the LGA. This will increase wider engagement in arts and cultural activities by the diverse demographic represented in the LGA, responding to culturally relevant content.
The focus is to up-skill CaLD artists and create strategic career pathways through intensive engagement, mentoring, and networking with industry professionals. These laboratories are inherently innovative for local CaLD artists who have limited access to such opportunities thereby championing the generation of new and diverse creative works, new networks, partnerships, and collaborations, as well as new projects.
