A Pakistani girl, born in Karachi and raised in a strict Muslim household, migrates to Australia with her family. As she navigates her dual identity in a dominant Western culture, she observes the traditional and patriarchal values upheld by both her parents.

Aminah is haphazardly married off to her maternal cousin after completing the HSC when her mother, Sakina, goes back to Pakistan on a family trip. By the age of eighteen, the girl faces the pressures of an impending arranged marriage. The values and expectations instilled in her from an early age become more pronounced as she grapples with the clash between her dreams and her family’s traditional beliefs. As she prepares for this new chapter, she begins to confront the complexities of her identity and the role she is expected to play within both her family and society.

The expectations and constraints she once faced as a daughter are now magnified in her role as a wife. She begins to see the deeper ramifications of the cultural and familial pressures she grew up with, leading her to question her place in this traditional framework. Her journey becomes a struggle between honouring her heritage and finding her voice within the constraints of her new reality.

 

Female, 28: Aminah Mustafa    

Aminah grew up between cultures and in a dysfunctional family home. Aminah is a westie who appears cold and careless; however, her stoic demeanour hides intergenerational childhood traumas from growing up in Pakistan and then Australia. Aaminah is intelligent and pretty but lacks conviction in herself and faith in her abilities. She’s deprived of the security and safety of being looked after and bearing the burden of being the eldest – this impacts her relationships with her in-laws, immediate family, husband, and kids.

Male, 40: Bilal Khan, Aminah’s Husband

Bilal is a confused man. Quick to become upset at any personal criticism or confrontation, taking the line of resistance and offense. Lacks education and, having grown up in Pakistan as Aaminah’s cousin, is the relative who is imported from Pakistan and has no say in the family dynamic. He is insecure and has no self-awareness of how he comes across. He is surprised and unsure why a beautiful, educated girl like Aaminah is married to him and this turns him into a controlling and abusive husband.

Male, 55: Mustafa Siddique, Aminah’s Father/Abbu

The father is a Pakistani man, a migrant who has carved out a life in Australia. Growing up in the suburbs of Karachi, he escaped a cycle of poverty through education and sheer determination. Outwardly, he appears charming, friendly, and kind, but at home, he reveals a starkly different persona—cold, distant, and authoritarian. Unaware of his bipolar disorder, his mood swings and strictness create a tense atmosphere, leaving his family walking on eggshells. As the sole breadwinner and the only literate member of the household, he bears the weight of responsibility, further straining his ability to connect with his family. His complex character casts a long shadow over his household, deeply affecting his children and shaping her journey.

Female, 45: Sakina Mustafa, Aminah’s Mother/Ammi

The mother is a Pakistani migrant who married the father at an early age. Deprived of an education, she is less educated and emotionally absent, her spirit dampened by her own experiences of family dysfunction and domestic violence. This history of trauma leaves her disconnected from her family, navigating her role as a mother and wife with a subdued resignation. Her character embodies the silent struggles of many women in her situation, offering a poignant contrast to the louder dynamics within the family/society.

Male, 25: Muhammad, Younger Brother

Clever, highly intelligent boy. He grew up loved, spoiled by his mother, who unconsciously believed that male children should be given more importance. By and by realises and absorbs the dysfunctional traits within the family, adopting her father Mustafa’s toxic traits, unable to be close to his sisters while having an oedipal-like relationship with his mother.

Female, 22: Zainab Mustafa, Sister

Quiet, cautious, and introverted, Zainab watches the impact of an arranged marriage on her elder sister and works hard at school to be a high achiever, knowing at a young age that education is her ticket out of the constraints of family and her freedom. She is independent and determined to set a new path for herself.

Female, 25: Mahira, Friend

A girl with a Pakistani background grew up in Australia. She is smart, empathetic, and outspoken.
